We are the co-vice presidents of U of M’s Women in Computer Science, Diljot and Raquel. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Raquel: When I first joined WICS I was pretty shy, but quite quickly I began to make friends and I started getting more involved in the WICS activities. I joined WICS because as a female in this field I understand very well how intimidating it can be being one of few women in a class packed with male students. I know some things that helped me was having other women in this field to look up to. I hope I can do the same for others. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Diljot: One of the biggest issues that plagues today's largest technology companies and even our University's computer science department is a lack of gender diversity. If our field remains skewed towards the young male population, then it is feasible for software to be inadequately supportive of others needs. Appropriate and unbiased design requires knowledge from all types of people. So I joined WICS to help out and encourage diversity and acceptance in the Computer Science field. The key thing about WICS is that, it's not about being exclusively female, but about bridging the gap between men and women in science, because after all, we all need to work together in the end. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since we were elected we have been really involved with the organization and planning of a lot of different activities. Everything from events with industry members to various outreaches. We look forward to helping more with the group during the next year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We're extremely proud of how far WICS has come and we recently had our first meeting, which was far more packed than we initially anticipated which is amazing. We hope to see you around! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #iconicduo #diversity #teamwork #womenintech #umanitoba #girlswhocode #computerscience #womenincomputing #umwics #womenwhocode
