What's the workshop about?

Child robot interaction has been growing in popularity in the past several years, as researchers from a range of disciplines endeavour to study children’s perceptions of and interactional behavior with robots, and produce guidelines for better robot design. However, conducting research with children can be a daunting task for those who do not have experience. Through this virtual workshop, we intend to provide a venue for experienced researchers to share their knowledge with researchers new to the study of child-robot interaction, providing advice on good practices in experimental design and how to successfully and confidently delve into this area.

You can participate in this workshop by submtting a 2-page abstract or short discussion point (see below), or by registering for the workshop as an attendee on the RO-MAN website.

This workshop took place in 2021. A Miro board with the workshop's acitivity and papers can be found here

Call for Submissions

We invite researchers to participate in the first virtual workshop on Child-Robot Interaction for Beginners: Supporting New Researchers (CRIB 2021). This workshop will provide a forum for experienced researchers in Child-Robot Interaction to pass down their knowledge to researchers new to the field. We welcome two types of submissions:

  1. Researchers with experience conducting research in Child-Robot Interaction should submit 2-page abstracts (excluding references) providing lessons learned, guidelines, advice, or experiences related to Child-Robot Interaction research
  2. Researchers new to the field of Child-Robot Interaction are welcome to submit 1-page questions, discussion points, or planned/ongoing research to be explored during the workshop

Selected submissions will be presented by the authors during the workshop, with the opportunity for attendees to ask questions and engage in discussion. Authors should keep in mind the objectives of the workshop as stated below.

The objectives of the workshop are as follows:

  • To discuss the highs and lows of conducting research in Child-Robot Interaction, sharing lessons and advice
  • To develop a set of guidelines for new researchers in Child-Robot interaction, to act as a reference when designing and planning research
  • To support the creation of a welcoming community of researchers in times when it may be difficult for junior researchers to reach out, and create a network of advice amongst senior and junior researchers who are currently or would like to conduct studies with children and robots
  • To discuss different methodological approaches that experienced researchers use to conduct research in child-robot interaction, and arrive at key unified principles for research in this area

Submissions can be within, but are not limited to, the following themes in Child-Robot Interaction:

  • Research methods
  • Experimental design
  • Interdisciplinary science
  • Reproducible science
  • Ethical concerns

Submissions should follow the IEEE two-column format, using one of the following templates: MS-Word or LaTeX. Submissions should be formatted as PDFs and submitted through the EasyChair link below.
